Five Safety Tips

Five safety tips

1. HYDRATE FOR SAFETY – Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water – thirst is often an early sign that dehydration has already begun.

2. HYDRATE FOR SAFETY – During hot-weather work, replace fluids regularly with water and electrolyte-replacement beverages like Sqwincher® to help maintain hydration and performance.

3. HYDRATE FOR SAFETY – Take advantage of scheduled rest breaks in shaded or cooled areas to reduce heat stress and support proper hydration.

4. HYDRATE FOR SAFETY – Dark-colored urine, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue can be warning signs of dehydration and should be addressed immediately.

5. HYDRATE FOR SAFETY – Encourage workers to begin each shift well hydrated, as proper fluid intake before work is just as important as hydration throughout the day.

Questions & Answers
Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)

Question – Is a safety data sheet (SDS) required for a non-hazardous chemical?

Answer – Under the U.S. OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are generally required only for hazardous chemicals. However, the answer depends on how the product is classified: If the product is classified as a hazardous chemical under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), an SDS is required. If the product is truly non-hazardous and does not meet OSHA's criteria for any physical or health hazard, OSHA does not require an SDS.

OSHA defines a hazardous chemical as any chemical classified as a physical hazard, health hazard, simple asphyxiant, combustible dust, pyrophoric gas, or hazard not otherwise classified. Manufacturers and importers are responsible for evaluating their products and preparing SDSs when those hazards are present. The standard does not require SDSs for chemicals that do not meet these classifications.

Guidance for employers

  • If an SDS is provided: Keep it accessible to employees as part of your Hazard Communication program, even if the product is considered non-hazardous.
  • If no SDS is available: Verify with the manufacturer whether the product has been evaluated and determined to be non-hazardous under OSHA criteria.
  • If customers require one: Request a voluntarily issued SDS or a written statement confirming the product’s non-hazardous status.

Safety Cans for Flammables

May gasoline be dispensed from a 5-gallon UL- approved safety can into the fuel tank of a tool such as a target saw, weed-eater, or 5-kw generator during a construction job?

The general requirements for the handling and use of flammable and combustible liquids such as gasoline are set forth in 29 CFR 1926.152(a): (1) Only approved containers and portable tanks shall be used for the storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids. Approved safety cans or Department of Transportation approved containers shall be used for the handling and use of flammable liquids in quantities of 5 gallons or less...

29 CFR 1926.155(l) defines a safety can as: An approved closed container, of not more than 5 gallons capacity, having a flash-arresting screen, spring-closing lid, and spout cover and is so designed that it will safely relieve internal pressure when subjected to fire exposure.

29 CFR 1926.155(a) defines "approved" as: (a) Approved, for the purpose of this subpart, means equipment that has been listed or approved by a nationally-recognized testing laboratory such as Factory Mutual Engineering Corp., or Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., or Federal agencies such as Bureau of Mines or U.S. Coast Guard, which issue approvals for such equipment.

In the background to OSHA Instruction STD 3-4.1A (De Minimis for Absence of a Flame Arrestor Screen in a Safety Can), OSHA noted that while most safety cans approved by listed agencies or organizations have flame-arrestor screens in safety can spouts, Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. does not require them for approval of safety cans. Instruction STD 3-4.1A provided: Purpose. This instruction establishes that the absence of a flame-arrestor screen in the pouring or spout of a safety can is treated as de minimis. When handling or using flammable or combustible liquids, the use of an Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. safety can without a flame-arrestor screen is treated as a de minimis violation.

As I See It

Richard A. Rivkin

It’s June 2026, and let’s talk about money. There’s one quote attributed to a 20th century bank robber that resulted in “Sutton’s Law” - a principle used in medicine and business that suggests focusing on the most obvious, high-return areas first. There’s another quote attributed to a 1976 film about the Watergate scandal – “Follow the money.” Benjamin Franklin’s quotation is “A penny saved is a penny earned" which signifies that reducing expenses increases wealth just as effectively as generating new income.

So, now comes the reality check. Saving money by purchasing cheaper products is not an effective strategy because cheaper products fail sooner and need to be replaced more often. And replacing products more often means that non-productive time increases (think of the time workers spend discarding failed product and procuring replacement product so they can continue their work). And cheaper, failing products can increase the risk of injuries (think of OSHA recordables) where the costs far outweigh any perceived savings from cheaper products.

Follow the money – to your insurance provider and discover the impact of injuries and claims on your workers’ compensation rates. Follow the money – to your OSHA 300, 300A, and 301A forms and apply available cost date to every recordable. Follow the money – to uncover the cost of unapproved channel purchases at big box stores and big company websites – both channels lacking the product knowledge necessary to keep your workers safe. Follow the money – to the cost of multiple, possibly redundant, purchase orders and receiving transactions. Follow the money – to the cost of document handling when modern technologies like EDI and punch-out and ACH/EFT payment systems are proven cost-savers. These money drains can really add up!

So, if you’re ready for a fresh, personal approach to safety products and services with experienced eyes on the total costs of safety, give us a call or visit us online at www.saftgard.com. Experience matters when it comes to your workers’ safety. That’s us -
