Keep Your Industrial Athletes at the Top of Their Game this Summer and Year-Round with Sqwincher® |
Dehydration is a threat in every season and especially during the summer months when the added heat and humidity can lead to elevated body temperatures and fluid loss. Understanding how worker performance and efficiency is affected by environmental conditions is critical to reducing dehydration-related illnesses and accidents.
Dehydration can occur from heat stress, cold stress, fatigue, illness, caffeine consumption and poor dietary intake, as well as a variety of other physical or work-related conditions. Motor speed and attention start to decline after using just 2% of body weight from sweating. At a 3-5% loss of fluids, performance can be reduced by 40-50%, predisposing workers to serious injury or illness, including heat stress, heat stroke, urinary and kidney problems and seizures or loss of consciousness. Workers can lose up to two gallons of fluid per day making them especially vulnerable to the hazards that can cause serious injury and/or illness. Fortunately, dehydration-related incidents are 100% preventable.
Water alone is not enough to replace the minerals that the body needs to combat dehydration. Avoid lost-time injury costs and OSHA citations with Sqwincher® - the only electrolyte replacement drink specially created for the high-heat-stress environment of the workplace.
Sqwincher® was designed with the industrial workplace in mind and provides an optimally-formulated supply of electrolytes (sodium and potassium) that workers need to stay safe and productive.
In order to provide for the daily hydration needs of workers, Sqwincher® has developed three distinct electrolyte replenishment formulations. Each formula does not exceed the 8% threshold for electrolytes and carbohydrates recommended by NIOSH.
Formulations include, Sqwincher®, the original hydration formula, Sqwincher® ZERO, the sugar-free, low-calorie formula, and finally, Sqwincher® EverLyte®, a clear formulation that contains no color, preservatives, or artificial sweeteners. Whether it’s a powder concentrate, liquid concentrate, ready-made drink, freeze pop, or any of the light calorie solutions, Sqwincher® stands behind those who make it happen every day – increasing efficiency and minimizing dehydration dangers.

1. SIZE MATTERS - You know that footwear and protective clothing come in sizes. Gloves, respirators, and earplugs also come in sizes. PPE that's too big provides inadequate protection. PPE that's too small is uncomfortable and impacts productivity.
2. FIT THE MASK TO THE TASK - Air-purifying respirators are designed for specific chemical or particulate hazards. Be sure you're using the right one for your application. 3. NOW HEAR THIS - Disposable earplugs are available in a variety of materials, sizes, and shapes. Give your workers a choice of products and instructions on proper insertion and use. 4. CUT IT OUT - Cut-resistant synthetic fiber textile gloves provide no knife-point puncture protection - only metal mesh gloves can do that. 5. SIGN HERE - Inadequate safety signage is a frequent violation and easily correctable. |
Question: What are the requirements for products like gloves that come in contact with food?
Answer: The Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. Government has published extensive regulations in 21CFR parts 170-199 identifying acceptable food additives, indirect food additives, and substances generally recognized as safe. Gloves are considered indirect food additives and therefore all components must comply with the acceptable food additives or substances generally recognized as safe. |

It is May 2024 and let’s explore the hand protection numbers. Trade advertising and content have focused for years on the cut level number. This is understandable when evaluated in response to hand injuries heavily caused by cuts.
So, with ANSI/ISEA-105 cut resistance ratings ranging from A1 to A9, what do those really mean? The different levels (A1 – A9) refer to the weight (grams) needed to cut through material with 20 mm of blade travel following ASTM F2992 test method. In your specific work application, is a glove rated A9 that much better than a glove rated A1? Only an actual on-the-job evaluation answers that question, because it is nearly impossible for any laboratory test to fully replicate the real-world application of gloves on your workers’ hands.
But cut resistance is only part of the analysis, and a glove designed just for a high cut resistance rating may be lacking in other areas of protection. Many hazards involve abrasion even more than cuts and the glove performance will be different for these different hazards. Punctures are another hand protection hazard that must be addressed, and to our knowledge, there is no direct correlation between cut, abrasion, and puncture ratings in ANSI/ISEA-105 or other national and international standards. With modern technology, industrial gloves are developed for specific purposes even if it is only general material handling (think grip and flexibility).
And if that is not confusing enough, other hazards such as chemical exposure and temperature extremes must be considered. Different liquid proof glove materials perform differently in different chemicals. Laboratory tests include exposure time, concentration, and the resulting chemical degradation and permeation data. But again, laboratory tests are only a starting point in the selection of chemical-resistant gloves. The bottom line (and it affects YOUR bottom line as well) is that it takes an experienced safety specialist to work through the overwhelming amount of test data and ratings to try to find the optimal recommendation for YOUR hazards.
That’s where we come in. We’re a team of experienced, dedicated safety professionals – real people to help you solve real problems. That’s who we are and what we do – because we’re Saf-T-Gard International – Bringing Workers Home Safely Since 1936. Sincerely, Richard A. Rivkin, Saf-T-Gard CEO and Chairman of the Board
