Protecting Vision: Understanding Eye Hazards in the Utilities Industry |
In the vast landscape of the utilities industry, where power generation, transmission, and distribution are vital, ensuring the safety of workers is paramount. Among the myriad of risks they face, eye hazards stand out as particularly concerning. From high-voltage equipment to hazardous chemicals, the potential for eye injuries is ever-present. Understanding the Risks
Within the utilities sector, workers encounter various hazards daily. These include the following: |
- Electrical Hazards: Electricians and technicians working on power lines or within substations face the constant threat of electrical arcs and flashes, which can cause severe burns to the eyes.
-
Mechanical Hazards: Machinery, equipment, and tools used in utility maintenance and construction can pose risks of impact, resulting in eye injuries from flying debris, particles, or tools.
- Chemical Hazards: Utility workers may come into contact with various chemicals, such as corrosive substances used in battery maintenance or cleaning agents for equipment, which can cause chemical burns or irritation to the eyes.
- Radiation Hazards: In certain utility operations, workers may be exposed to radiation, such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation from welding or infrared radiation from heat sources, leading to damage to the eyes if proper precautions are not taken.
|
Prevention and Mitigation Strategies
To safeguard against these hazards, utilities companies implement comprehensive safety protocols and provide workers with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Key strategies include: |
-
Training and Education: Proper training is essential to ensure workers understand the risks associated with their tasks and know how to mitigate them. This includes training on the use of PPE, safe work practices, and emergency procedures.
-
Use of PPE: PPE, including safety glasses, goggles, face shields, and helmets with eye protection, plays a critical role in preventing eye injuries. These items should meet industry standards and be worn consistently when working in hazardous environments.
- Engineering Controls: Employers should implement engineering controls, such as machine guards, barriers, and ventilation systems, to minimize exposure to eye hazards where possible. Regular equipment maintenance and inspections are also crucial to identifying and addressing potential risks.
-
Worksite Hazard Assessments: Conducting thorough hazard assessments allows companies to identify potential risks and implement appropriate control measures. This includes evaluating tasks, equipment, and environmental factors that could impact eye safety.
-
Emergency Response Preparedness: In the event of an eye injury, prompt and effective first aid can prevent further damage. Utilities companies should have protocols in place for managing eye injuries, including access to eyewash stations and emergency medical treatment.
|
Promoting a Culture of Safety
Ultimately, creating a culture of safety within the utilities industry requires a collective effort from employers, workers, and regulatory bodies. By prioritizing eye safety through proper PPE, training, equipment provision, and proactive hazard management, the utilities industry can significantly reduce the risk of eye injuries and ensure the well-being of their workforce.

Watch the FREE Superior Glove How Nudge Theory Helps Reduce Hand Injuries Webinar ON DEMAND |
Ever found yourself wondering why workers have absent-minded accidents? It turns out our brains are engineered to optimize efficiency and respond swiftly. Most of our decisions aren't the result of careful, rational thought. Instead, 90% or more of our decisions are driven by instinct. While this might be beneficial in saving time or effort, it doesn't always result in the wisest decisions regarding our safety.
Because of this, the environment and context in which we're making safety decisions plays a tremendous role in shaping our actions. This is good news! As Superior Glove has learned in their work with behavioral experts, we can reduce and eliminate injuries with tiny tweaks in workers’ surroundings—"nudges" that can sway decisions and spark positive behavior.
In this webinar, Superior Glove’s Jill Dales explains what nudge theory is and how to apply it to create a safer workplace that can change worker behavior. Learning objectives include the following: |
- What “nudging” is and how it can be used to reduce or eliminate hand injuries
-
How to assess work environments for place to institute nudges
- Practical examples that can be implemented
- What pitfalls to avoid when creating nudges

Question - What's the difference between bump caps and safety caps?
Answer - OSHA regulations in 29 CFR 1910.135 state: "The employer shall ensure that each affective employee wears a protective helmet when working in areas where there is a potential for injury to the head from falling objects. ... Protective helmets purchased after July 5, 1994, shall comply with ANSI Z89.1..., American National Standard for Personnel Protection-Protective Headwear for Industrial Workers-Requirements, which is incorporated by reference as specified in Sec. 1910.6, or shall be demonstrated to be equally effective." In addition, OSHA has issued interpretative ruling letters expanding the scope with language such as: "...Although there is a minimal chance of head injury from falling objects, employees are exposed to bumps, cuts and scalp injuries..." The bottom line - bump caps do NOT comply with ANSI Z89.1. Safety caps will have permanent marking certifying compliance with ANSI Z89.1 and therefore compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.135.

Is it permitted to intermingle flammable and combustible liquids in a storage cabinet?
Clarification was requested on an apparent ambiguity in OSHA's standard for Flammable and Combustible Liquids, 29 CFR 1910.106, specifically the use of the words "or" and "nor" in the paragraph Design, Construction, and Capacity of Storage Cabinets-Maximum Capacity, 29 CFR 1910.106(d)(3)(i), which states, "Not more than 60 gallons of Class I or Class II liquids, nor more than 120 gallons of Class III liquids may be stored in a storage cabinet."
This language is an adaptation of similar language in section 4210 of the 1969 edition of the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Standard 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids (source standard for 29 CFR 1910.106), which states, "Not more than 60 gallons of flammable or 120 gallons of combustible liquids may be stored in a storage cabinet."
OSHA never intended to prohibit intermingling flammable and combustible liquids in a storage cabinet or to allow more than 120 gallons of any flammable and combustible liquids combination in a storage cabinet. NFPA 30 - 1981 Section 4-3.1 states, "Not more than 120 gal (454.2L) of Class I, Class II, and Class IIIA liquids may be stored in a storage cabinet. Of this total, not more than 60 gal (227.1L) may be of Class I and Class II liquids..." OSHA finds this language represents the intent of 29 CFR 1910.106(d)(3)(i) clearly and unambiguously.
