ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 First Aid Kits and Supplies - The revision of ANSI/ISEA Z308.1, the standard for workplace first aid kits and supplies, has completed consensus body review and will move to ANSI for final approval. The update reflects today’s workplace needs, including stronger guidance around bleeding control, naloxone, and mobile workers. The revised standard is expected to be published in Q3 2026.

ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Head Protection - The revised ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 standard for industrial head protection has completed consensus body review and will move to ANSI for final approval. ISEA has prepared guidance to help members communicate clearly and accurately about the pending standard and revisions end users should understand. Publication is expected in Q3 2026.

Trauma Response - ISEA is developing ISEA 320 for Emergency Trauma Equipment, a standard to provide guidance for workplace emergency-response products intended to address life-threatening incidents not covered by conventional first aid kits. ISEA 320 has been approved for development by the ISEA Board of Directors, and the First Aid Product Group is actively working on a draft.

Heat Stress - ISEA is developing ISEA 600, Standard Performance Specification for On-Body Heat Stress Management Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which will focus on PPE used to help manage heat stress while worn on the body. The standard will address products such as cooling apparel, bandanas, cooling towels, hard hats, and other PPE designed to support workers in hot conditions. Development has been approved by the ISEA Board of Directors, and the ISEA Foundation has provided funding to begin research and testing to support the standard.

Cutting Knives - ISEA is developing ISEA 401, Safety Cutting Knife Classification, which will address the classification, testing, and safety performance of safety cutting knives. The standard will help manufacturers classify their products, provide clearer distinctions between different types of safety knives, and give users better information to help select the appropriate cutting tool for the task. This work is currently in development through ISEA’s Safety Cutting Knives Product Group.

Question – Does OSHA actually require personal protective equipment (PPE) to properly fit the employee wearing it?
Answer – Yes. OSHA requires employers to select PPE that is appropriate for the employee and the hazards involved, and proper fit is an important part of providing effective protection. In fact, OSHA recently made this requirement more explicit for the construction industry.
Effective January 13, 2025, OSHA revised 29 CFR 1926.95 to specifically require construction employers to ensure that personal protective equipment “properly fits each affected employee.” The change brought OSHA’s construction requirements more closely in line with existing general industry requirements and addressed concerns that improperly fitting PPE can provide inadequate protection or create additional hazards.
Why does fit matter? PPE that is too large, too small, loose, restrictive, or otherwise poorly fitted may not adequately protect the worker. An oversized safety vest can become caught in equipment, improperly sized gloves may reduce dexterity or create entanglement hazards, and poorly fitting fall protection, protective clothing, footwear, or head protection may not perform as intended.
OSHA emphasizes that PPE should fit comfortably and properly because incorrect fit can make the difference between a worker being protected and being dangerously exposed. Employers should therefore consider individual worker sizing and body dimensions when conducting PPE assessments and selecting equipment—not simply purchase a single “standard” size for everyone. |

Is Your Workplace Ready for Severe Weather?
Severe weather can strike with little warning—and knowing what to do before an emergency occurs can help protect workers when every second counts. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.38, employers required to maintain an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) must establish procedures for reporting emergencies, evacuation, accounting for employees after evacuation, and performing critical operations during an emergency.
An effective plan should address the hazards most likely to affect your workplace, including severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, flooding, fires, chemical releases, and power outages. Employees should know evacuation routes, designated shelter areas, emergency communication procedures, and where to report following an evacuation. OSHA also recommends that employers review emergency plans with employees and conduct drills as often as necessary to keep workers prepared.

It’s August 2026, and I want to share something that I saw online. The quote was “PPE is not a product; it is a decision.” I would expand that to read “PPE is not a product; it is a mindset and a decision.”
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used to be a product. Buyers wanted work gloves or hard hats or respirators or rainsuits or earplugs or whatever. The focus was on the product – what is it, what does it cost, when can I get it? A lot of purchasing professionals and safety directors and even we suppliers grew up with that concept of PPE as a product – like copy paper, sandpaper, staples, or boxes.
That commoditization of PPE is inherently dangerous – right along with the commoditization of the workforce (both of which we strenuously dispute).
So, what do we mean by PPE as a mindset? PPE as a mindset means treating PPE as more than something you put on before a task - it represents a culture of safety and personal responsibility. It means identifying hazards before starting a task and then eliminating or controlling the hazards first knowing that PPE is the last line of defense. It means choosing PPE based on the actual hazards. In short: PPE is not just equipment - it’s a mindset of recognizing hazards, making safe choices, and taking responsibility for everyone’s safety.
PPE as a mindset brings all the stakeholders together with a common purpose – protect workers’ lives and health. The natural effect of that is worker satisfaction and motivation which further results in improved productivity and efficiency, plus lower insurance and health care costs.
With PPE as a mindset, the next logical step is PPE as a decision. It’s a decision to look at the total cost of ownership (a product that costs twice as much but lasts three times longer is beneficial). It’s a decision to involve the workforce as stakeholders in evaluating PPE for fit, form, and function. It’s a decision to utilize external resources from PPE suppliers as subject-matter experts to provide an objective analysis of hazards and prepare recommendations accordingly.
