Saf-T-Gard Summer Safety Essentials

Summer is here, which means so are the additional workplace hazards it brings that can lead to an increase in accidents, injuries, and illnesses if not properly addressed. Now's the time to start fresh and stock up on all the safety essentials to ensure worker productivity.

Workers are at a higher risk of on-the-job injuries, which for employers, means a higher risk of lost productivity and increasing costs. According to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workplace injuries are more frequent during the summer months of June, July, and August. Between the three months, an average of 3,331.3 workplace injuries occur daily.

During the summer, more workers are performing job tasks while exposed to the outdoor elements such as construction, road paving, engineering, roofing, painting, landscaping, utility work, and agricultural work. However, indoor workers in chemical plants, foundries, HVAC, and material handling and distribution warehouses work in hot conditions year-round that are often made worse in the summer months.

Workers that are laboring outdoors or in warmer temperatures must prepare for heat stress, prolonged sun, and UV ray exposure, falling debris and dropped objects, storm-related weather, flooding, low visibility, dangerous road conditions, slips, trips, and falls, cuts and scrapes, allergies, sunburns, insect bites, and stings to name a few!

Fortunately, employers can reduce accidents and injuries by taking the proper precautions by selecting the right personal protective equipment (PPE) for the application and environment.

From rehydration drinks, cooling towels and bands, safety glasses, and outdoor protection, to hard hats, rainwear, Hi-Viz clothing, first aid kits, and burn care, Saf-T-Gard has everything your workers need and more to stand up to these challenges Click here to shop them online, or call customer service at

Is Your Workplace Prepared to Treat Sudden Cardiac Arrest? Jumpstart Your AED Program Today and Save more Lives with the ZOLL® AED Plus® in stock now

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of unexplained death in the United States. Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHSCA) is responsible for approximately 350,000 deaths in the United States annually. The overall survival rate is just 12%. Research shows a fivefold increase in survivability — from 5% to 24% — when an automated external defibrillator (AED) is used. Sadly, the same research shows that an AED is only available 2% of the time.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), 10,000 cases of SCA happen at work each year. If employees aren’t trained to act, a victim’s chance of survival is very low. Rapid response, CPR, and AED use are absolutely critical for a positive outcome.

SCA occurs when an electrical malfunction of the heart causes it to suddenly stop beating properly. There are no warning signs, and it can happen to anyone, anywhere. You don’t need to be a professional rescuer to help a SCA victim while waiting for emergency services to arrive. A victim’s best chance of survival is immediate treatment with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an AED.

As the manager of your building, facility, or office, you’re responsible for the safety of your employees. Do you have the necessary resources available in case of an emergency? Someone’s life may depend on it. Are you prepared to respond to an SCA emergency?

THE IMPORTANCE OF AEDs

Investing in AEDs and making early defibrillation a part of your emergency response plan is important. Here’s why:

  • Defibrillation within three minutes of SCA increases the chances of survival.
  • Calling 911 is necessary, but the wait for first responders may take too long. The average
call-to-shock time in a typical community is nine minutes.
  • OSHA now recommends AEDs in the workplace, and legislation in your state may require workplaces to provide them.
ZOLL® AED Plus® in the Workplace

Saf-T-Gard has the ZOLL® AED Plus®
8000-00-4007-01 Fully-Automatic Package
available for immediate shipment.

Only the ZOLL® AED Plus® is equipped with Real CPR Help® technology, giving the rescuer real-time feedback on the depth and rate of chest compressions during CPR. The sensor in the pads lets the AED see each chest compression and guides the rescuer, with prompts and a real-time bar gauge, to the recommended depth and rate of compressions.

Additional features and benefits include the following:

  • Novel electrode design delivers a five-year shelf life and fits 99% of the population’s chest anatomy.
  • Pull-tabs expose the conductive gel on each pad only when it is in direct contact with the skin, limiting the chance of gel contamination.
  • CPR-D-padz® meet applicable ANSI/AAMI/ISO
DF-39-1993 requirements and offer clear anatomical placement illustrations as well as a CPR hand positioning landmark and comes complete with a rescue accessory package, including a barrier mask, razor, scissors, disposable gloves, and a towelette.
  • Display screen presents the elapsed time and number of shocks delivered.
  • Back-lit display screen provides simultaneous text with every audio prompt and a circle of lighted graphical icons that show what to do.

Questions & Answers
Sunscreen for outdoor protection

Question - What is OSHA's policy on skin cancer as a risk to outdoor workers?

Answer - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) does address worker exposure to the sun's radiation indirectly under the 29 Code of Federal Regulations 1910.132(a) pertaining to personal protective equipment (PPE). Employers are to use effective forms of protection such as
wide-brim hats and long sleeve clothing. In situations where the only effective means of protection is sunscreen, then it too may be used. Saf-T-Gard proudly offers a full line of CoreTex® Skin Care products, including SunX® Suncreens, BugX® Insect Repellents, and IvyX® Poisonous Plant

Fall protection on guardrail platforms

Fall protection requirements for workers on
guardrail-equipped platforms

Employees are working on a guardrail-equipped scissor-lift platform that extends beyond the wheelbase of the lift. The scissor-lift meets all the applicable requirements in Part 1926 Subpart L. The workers are on the
scissor-lift only when the scissor-lift is stationary. In this scenario, are such workers required to be tied-off?

When working from an elevated scissor-lift (ANSI A92.6 series), a worker need only be protected from falling by a properly designed and maintained guardrail system. However, if the guardrail system is less than adequate, or the worker leaves the safety of the work platform, an additional fall protection device would be required.

As I See It

Richard A. Rivkin

It is July 2025 and up here in the Chicago area we are right in the middle of summer. It’s hot outside and often hot inside. OSHA guidelines for heat stress emphasize prevention through acclimatization, providing access to water and rest, and offering cool areas for recovery. Employers must also train workers to recognize symptoms and take appropriate action, including first aid for heat-related illnesses. We do not get too many inquiries regarding heat stress in the middle of January but now – absolutely. So, what would I do???

I need to drink more water. Water is a necessity, but water does not replace the electrolytes that hot workers perspire away. And since the simplest solution is often the best, I’d like to recommend Sqwincher® Quik Stik™ single-serve powder concentrate in many different flavors. One pack is ideal for 16-20 oz. water bottles. No mixing, no waste (other than disposing of the foil packet and eventually the empty water bottle). I personally recommend this product for a couple of reasons. First, it’s sugar free. Second, it is lower in sodium and higher in potassium than the big name sports drinks. That means it’s not a sports drink – it is a work drink. Choose your flavor on saftgard.com and get re-hydrated!

If I am working outside, I look for other cool ways to keep cool. We have a couple of cooling neck shades that attach to safety caps and provide evaporative cooling. One model is even flame-resistant! And we have some evaporative cooling towels and cooling bandanas. Be cool by keeping cool.

Of course, if there are overhead hazards, I would definitely want safety caps with ventilation along the top. My eyes need protection from sunlight, UV, and other hazards so I will select safety eyewear with indoor-outdoor lenses or mirror lenses in a wide variety of frames for a comfortable – and safe – fit.

I have been around high-voltage energized lines and equipment, so I appreciate (and respect) the protection of arc flash hoods and clothing. Technology wins again for arc flash protection with lighter-weight fabrics and arc flash hoods with the newly-designed cooling fans.

I have often been quoted as saying that our product quality control starts with the fact that we won’t sell anything that I wouldn’t wear or use for the purpose intended. You have my name and my word on that, because we are Saf-T-Gard International –  Bringing Workers Home Safely Since 1936.

Sincerely,
Richard A. Rivkin, CEO and Chairman of the Board
